Project Overview:

Em Dub Design took over this project in January 2019 at the request of Denver Parks and Recreation (DPR) to assist with guiding the design team through final construction documents, bidding, and construction. Major drivers for the project included a volunteer-led installation of the playground equipment for the Greater Greener conference in June of 2019 and donations of play equipment and products by local and national vendors.

It became evident that the project could not be bid as a single phase and constructed in the required timeframe, so Em Dub worked closely with the design team and City to identify the priority items and revise the construction set accordingly. Phase 1 and 2 removed an outdated playground and installed a new parking lot and ninja warrior-like linked playground. Phase 3 constructed a tot and young adult natural playground.

Em Dub guided the Design Team through final City reviews for phase 2 and led the bid process to the parks and recreation on-call contractors. The awarded contractor was already on-site working on phase 1, so we were able to streamline the contracting and Notice to Proceed phase and save additional time to prepare for the volunteer event. With much coordination between the contractor, design team, donors, Greater Greener conference organizers, and City staff, the site was ready for a successful volunteer-led installation of the playground, plantings, and mulching.

In early 2020, a bid was attempted for Phase 3, however it was non-responsive due to the limited on-call contractor availability at the time. Later in 2020, the project was re-bid to the new DPR on-call contractor pool and was awarded. Phase 3 construction of the natural playground was completed in Spring 2021. A highlight of this particular phase was a final volunteer day coordinated by the Five Points Ambassadors (youth advisory committee comprised of local residents) to engage the surrounding community.
